The symbol Approximately Equal (≈) is a mathematical operator used to indicate that two expressions or phrases are similar, but not exactly equal.  Visually, a symbol is a scribble that corresponds to a sign.

In today’s article, you will learn all the available ways to enter the About symbol in Microsoft Word and Excel, both on Windows and Mac.

Without further ado, let’s get to work.

Approximately equal sum orientation (≈)

The following table summarizes how to enter approximately one character on a Mac or Windows computer. You can also copy and paste a character into a document to save typing time.

Approximately matches the detail symbol
Name of the symbol Almost equal to a sign
Symbol name 2 About even
Alt Code 247
Short overview for Windows 2248, Alt+X
Abbreviation of Mac Option+X

Press Option+X on the Mac keyboard to enter a character that roughly matches a character on the keyboard. For Windows : While holding down the Alt key, press the Alt key on the numeric keypad for a character that is approximately 247, and then release the Alt key.

Message: There are several symbols, including the tilde ( ~ ), that are sometimes used to represent a coarse equality operator. However, the most commonly used symbol is almost identical to the sign ( ≈ ).

The short guide above contains useful information about the About symbol. However, below are some detailed options you can use to insert this symbol into a Word or Excel document.

Enter approximately equal (≈) in Word/Excel/PowerPoint

Several options let you enter any character in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.

In this section, I present several methods you can use to type or insert the inequality sign in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Without further ado, let’s get to work.

Option 1: Use of approximately identical inheritance code for Windows

Corresponds roughly to the character change code – 247.

The approximate sign or symbol Raven has no special key on the keyboard. However, if you are using a Windows PC, you can simply enter this character using the Alt Numpad input method, also known as the Alt Code method. To do this, hold down the Alt key while selecting a number (247) that represents an approximately equal character on the numeric keypad.

NOTE: This method can be used anywhere in the Windows operating system, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint. However, your computer must be equipped with a numeric keyboard. Therefore, it will not work if the keyboard does not have a numeric keypad.

Follow the steps below to enter this character using the alt-code method:

  • Place the cursor where you want the symbol.
  • Hold down the Alt key on the keyboard.
  • While holding down the Alt key, press the character change code (247). You must enter the alphabetical code with the numerical keypad. If you are using a laptop without a numeric keypad, this method may not be suitable for you. Some laptops have a hidden numeric keypad that can be enabled by pressing Fn+NmLk on the keyboard.
  • Release the Alt key after pressing the digits on the numeric keypad to insert the symbol into the document.

So you can enter the Approx character directly into Windows using the Alt code method.

Option 2: With approximately the same reduction ratio for the Mac

Almost identical symbol – Option+X.

To enter this character on a Mac using the keyboard shortcut described above, follow these instructions:

  • First, place the insertion point where you want to insert this character.
  • Hold down the Option key and press the X key on the keyboard once.

Use this shortcut to type the About icon anywhere on your Mac.

Option 3: Copy and paste about the same as

Another easy way to add Almost Equal Entry on any PC is my favorite method: Copy and paste. This option works everywhere, whether in Word, Excel or PowerPoint.

Just copy the icon from somewhere, for example. For example, from a web page or a character table for Windows users, navigate to where you need the symbol and press Ctrl+V to insert it.

Below is the icon to copy and paste into your document. Just select it and press Ctrl+C to copy it, move it to the desired place and press Ctrl+V to paste it.

For Windows users, follow these instructions to copy and paste an almost identical character using the Character Map dialog box.

  • Click the Start button and locate the character table.
  • You should see the Character Map application in the search results, click on it or press Enter to open it.

  • The dialog box Symbol Map opens. Click the Advanced View check box to expand the dialog box with additional options.

  • On the expanded screen, enter Almost equal to.
  • In the Symbol Map dialog box, only the Approximate character should now be displayed. Double-click the icon to select it. You can also press the Select key.
  • After selecting a symbol, press the Copy button to copy it.

  • Now go to the desired location (whether in Word, Excel or PowerPoint) and press Ctrl+V to paste.

Allows you to use the Symbol Map dialog box to copy and paste any symbol on a Windows PC.

Option 4: Using the dialog box for inserting characters

The Insert Symbols dialog box is a symbol library from which you can insert any symbol into a Word document with a few mouse clicks.

NOTE: This option allows you to insert this symbol in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Follow these steps to insert the symbol About right into a word using the Insert Symbol dialog box.

  • Click to place the cursor where you want to insert the character.
  • Click on the Insert tab.

  • In the Symbols category, click the Symbols drop-down list and choose More Symbols.

  • The Symbol dialog box appears. From the Mathematical Operators subgroup drop-down list, select to display the symbols in this category, including the Equal sign.
  • Select the icon and click the Insert button. You can also double-click the icon to insert it into the document.

The symbol is inserted exactly where you placed the cursor.

Here are the steps you can follow to paste About Equal into a Word document.

Option 5: With autocorrect, wordcontains about the same character.

Another way to achieve approximate equality is to use Word’s AutoCorrect feature.

AutoCorrect in MS Word is a tool that corrects these spelling errors.

This feature allows you to assign custom shortcuts to characters that are frequently entered in the document. If you z. For example, if you often enter the character Equal, you can give it a label such as APROX=. For example, when you type APROX=, Word thinks you meant to type ≈ and automatically converts to the approximately equal sign.

What I like about autocorrect is that you can assign a code to a character, and Word will gladly insert that code for you as you type.

Straight up the stairs.

  • Click on the Insert tab. In the Symbols category, click the Symbols drop-down list and choose More Symbols.

  • The Symbol dialog box appears. From the Subset drop-down list, select Mathematical Operators to display all mathematical operator symbols that contain the equation’s approximation symbol.
  • Select an icon and press the AutoCorrection key.

  • The AutoCorrection dialog box appears. In the Replace: field, type the label or text you want to assign to the symbol. Make sure that field C: has approximately the same value.

  • Click the Add button and then the OK button.

At this point, every time you type APROX= in a Word document, it is converted to an About Equal character.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind when using the AutoCorrect method to type a word in an approximately uniform manner.

  • AutoCorrect distinguishes between upper and lower case letters. In other words, if you type APROX= (lowercase), Word will not automatically correct it unless you type APROX= (uppercase). Whatever case you use to assign AutoCorrect text, Word recognizes it.
  • If there is text before or after autocorrect, Word considers it part of the text and therefore does not perform autocorrect. For example, XAPROX= will not be converted because APROX= is associated with another X character.

As you can see, there are many different ways to enter the symbol in much the same way on any PC or laptop running Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Using keyboard shortcuts for Windows and Mac makes this task the fastest.
