The implementation of the Purge can transform syncing mechanisms, as during the process, new nodes will implement a checkpoint sync approach, beginning with the latest finalized checkpoint block instead of the genesis block. The Purge also enhances node decentralization, as it redistributes historical data across the Ethereum network. The Purge will enable Ethereum clients to undergo significant cleanup efforts and eliminate redundant code remnants from the time when Ethereum was still based on a PoW consensus mechanism. Another implication of the Purge is linked to Ethereum’s smart contracts. What’s next for Ethereum?

Ethereum has had some significant milestones so far, as it successfully transitioned to Ethereum 2.0, but Vitalik Buterin’s vision hasn’t yet been fulfilled completely: there are still many improvements to be completed, all aiming to make Ethereum more robust by introducing new functionalities to the network.

While Ethereum enthusiasts are eager to find out when each of the Ethereum upgrades will be achieved, it’s challenging to predict such a thing because many improvements are worked on in parallel, but they aren’t developed at a similar speed. For example, quantum resistance is an upgrade that isn’t a high priority, which means it is unlikely to be implemented for at least the next five years. In fact, it could take as much as ten years until we see it coming to fruition.  

Moreover, it is worth noting that an upgrade’s urgency doesn’t necessarily stay the same over time – it can change based on different external factors (if we take the previous example, one factor could be the advancements in quantum computers). Ethereum development can be understood more quickly through an analogy to biological evolution: a network that has the capacity to adapt to challenges and maintain fitness has a higher chance of succeeding than a network that is resistant to change. Once the network becomes more secure and scalable, and thus, more performance, it will need fewer changes to its protocol.
