Design and ergonomics
The Acer Predator XB271HU is an excellent monitor with a small and stylish stand. Not everyone likes design because of its player-inspired aesthetics. Here the red parts of the board stand out against the Predator logo on the front. Its wide base prevents it from moving and swinging. The top and bottom edges are smooth, which is useful when installing multiple monitors. The screen looks a little bulky from the side.
On the front of the ergonomic monitor you can rotate the screen 30 degrees in each direction while simultaneously adjusting the inclination by 40 degrees (5 degrees to the front and 35 degrees to the back). You can also adjust the height by 150 mm (5.9). The base is 45 centimetres wide and about 28 centimetres deep. There are 100 x 1000 mm holes for VESA mounting.
The DisplayPort is used for 1440p at 165 Hz, plus an additional HDMI connection that provides an output up to 60 Hz with (2650 X 1440). Next to the switch, in the lower right corner, there are five buttons to navigate through the OSD menu. Connections consist of a quad-core USB 3.0 hub (two connectors on the side), a headphone jack and built-in 2x2W DTS speakers.
Characteristics
The monitor features a 27-inch (2560 x 1440 pixel) high resolution QHD IPS display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of 109 PPI. It has a response time of 4 ms and an update rate of 144 Hz, which can be accelerated to 165 Hz.
The Acer Predator XB271HU not only looks like a game monitor, but also works. Like the other monitors in the Acer Predator XB1 Series, it offers additional gaming features such as Dark Boost, which changes the gamma curve and increases visibility in a dark area in video games. For FPS (First Person Shooting Games), a custom targeting screen is provided for greater accuracy with three customizable profiles.
You can choose from several high-sensitivity pixel modes, such as Off, Normal and Extreme, although we recommend using Off or Normal. There is a hotkey in game mode that allows users to choose from a set of three game profiles to adjust the image settings. There is a ULMB to reduce motion blur, while the built-in blue light reduces eye strain.
OSD and setting
You can navigate the Acer Predator XB271HU OSD using the five unmarked buttons on the front panel. But the buttons are cheap and become uncomfortable and difficult to use. The exact function of each button depends on where you are in the OSD menu. To find out, you need to see what’s painted on the top right of the screen.
Pressing one of the buttons opens a shortcut menu with five options: play mode, restart, speaker volume, connection selection and function menu. The function menu opens to a larger menu with more options. The first option, called Image, allows you to control brightness and contrast at the same time as the eColor management option. In the color menu, you can change the color space using options 1.8 or 2.2 to adjust the color settings (user, cold, warm, blue light). The 6-axis color options allow you to set the colors red, green, blue, cyan, yellow and magenta within a range from 1 to 100 for each color.
The OSD menu allows users to change the language and transparency of the OSD menu by forcing the monitor to display the current refresh rate in the upper right corner and activate the ASUS playback mode. The setup menu includes setting options such as turning on/off the blue button next to the power switch, activating USB 3.0 ports after turning on the monitor, activating the ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur) and overclocking the panel from the factory setting of 144 Hz to 165 Hz. The latest information menu shows the resolution, the current refresh rate, the G-synchronization and the game mode activation status.
Quality
The Acer Predator XB271HU is equipped with an Acer Optronics M270DAN0.26 8-bit IPS panel with white LED backlight (W-LED). There is no flickering of the screen and no inconvenience during operation. Gamma was about 2.0 and 2.1, but there was no evidence of leaching during gambling or other activities. The black and white values were normal, but not perfect.
When the monitor is first connected to the standard settings, it uses a standard image profile that sets the color temperature to warm (6500K), gamma to 2.2, brightness to 80, contrast to 50 and saturation to 100, while other settings such as blue light, dark gain, adaptive contrast and sRGB are disabled. If you change one of these options, the profile immediately changes from Default to Custom. The other parameters of the company profile are Standard, ECO, Graphics and Video.
After calibrating the settings it is recommended to keep the color temperature at 6500K, gamma up to 2.2 and brightness around 120 nits while maintaining equilibrium. The image quality improved immediately after calibration. The colors were more realistic, the shadows were more detailed and there were few color bars left.
Power
The overall performance of the Acer Predator XB271HU is super smooth, mainly thanks to the high frame rate panel supported by NVIDIA G-Sync technology. It adjusts the refresh rate of the screen to the current frame rate and synchronizes it to produce a smooth image without interruption. Overclocking the monitor is quite simple and can be done with a single adjustment in the OSD menu.
The monitor has a response time of 4 ms GtG and uses overdrive technology to speed up the pixel transition. The option is called OD in the OSD menu and has three different settings: OFF, Normal and Extreme. For games, the best settings seem to be normal. When it’s out, ghosts are visible in dark games, and in extreme cases it creates a lot of distractions. In the case of an input delay, the measured value was less than 10 ms, increasing the overload in normal mode after switching to extreme mode.
If you are interested in eliminating halo completely, Acer Predator supports XB271HU ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blue), which is included with NVIDIA G-Sync. But the disadvantage is that you can’t combine ULMB or G-Sync. To use the ULMB, disable G-Sync and reduce the update rate to 120 Hz. After that, the brightness is significantly reduced and much lower than when the G-Sync function is activated.
Connection and power consumption
Like any display with NVIDIA G-Sync, the Acer Predator XB271HU is limited to HDMI (1.4) and DisplayPort (1.2) video inputs. If you want to use the high refresh rate and G-Sync, the HMDI will not work because it cannot work at 144 Hz and 1440p resolution. The only way to connect to your PC is via DisplayPort. The speakers are hardly usable and it is best to connect headphones with a 3.5 mm audio jack. Of the three available USB 3.0 ports, one serves as an uplink port, while the other two can be connected to external devices or hard drives. Temporary disks, such as memory cards or an SD card reader, can be connected to the USB 3.0 ports on the side, as everything you connect comes out.
The power supply is built into the monitor, eliminating the need for an external power supply. The power consumption of the monitor is still high in standby mode, nothing is connected to the USB 3.0 ports. After starting the Deep Sleep function, power consumption is significantly reduced, but make sure that the option on the OSD is turned on.
Conviction
No wonder the Acer Predator XB271HU is still a popular 2K monitor after four years. It really is a fantastic gaming monitor that can also meet other needs. By buying one of these devices you immediately become a better player, especially if you upgrade your standard 60 Hz monitor. It looks good, has all the necessary connections and functions. The monitor has its drawbacks, but with its perfect calibration setting, it’s ideal for gaming and everyday use. After the tests, we can sincerely recommend it to anyone looking for a game instructor.
