Laptops have become an indispensable part of our daily lives. It belongs to many people and allows them to perform their daily tasks without being tied to a desk.
If desktops have their fans and for good reason, there is no denying the benefits of a good laptop. Many people, including myself, have a laptop as their main computer and use it with peripherals outside their office.
These devices usually include a monitor. Now when you connect your laptop to your desktop, you can close the lid and use the external screen as you would in a desktop environment. However, if you remove the lid, your laptop will go to sleep.
In this article, we will talk about using a laptop with an external monitor with the lid down.

All you need to do is change your laptop’s power settings, here’s how.
Step one: Right-click the battery icon on the taskbar and click Power Options.
Step two: When the Power Options window opens, click Choose what to do when you close the cover in the left window.
Step three: Here you can define what pressing the power button, pressing the standby button and closing the lid should do in case of power or battery consumption.
In the drop-down menu, set When I close the lid to Do nothing, and you’re good to go. Now when you close the lid, your laptop’s screen will be turned off, but the device will continue to work as usual. You can use an external monitor to control your laptop when the cover is removed.

If you are more of a terminal type, there is another way to quickly change the above settings.
Use the following command to do nothing when the cover is disconnected from the power supply:
powercfg /setacvalueindex schema_current sub_button lidaction 0
Or the next command is to do nothing while the lid is on the battery:
powercfg /setdcvalueindex schema_current sub_button lidaction 0
The value 0 at the end is the parameter to be changed. You can replace it with the following values to get a different result.
- 0 : Nothing to do.
- 1 : Sleeping
- 2 : Sleep mode
- 3 : Finish the job
There is also a script created and distributed by the Microsoft Technet Gallery for the same purpose.
The use of the script is quite simple. Just download it to a location you can reach from the command line with administrator privileges. You can then either print the cover so the device goes to sleep when you close it, or turn the cover on so the device stays on and the screen goes off.

Once you are done changing the power settings, it is time to connect the external monitor and change some display settings.
If your laptop is equipped with an HDMI port (which it really should be in 2021), you can just plug in a cable from a monitor that may also have an HDMI output. Otherwise, there are HDMI to VGA adapters and vice versa it is possible to change the output mode depending on your equipment.
Then just press the Windows + P keys to open the monitor settings and select only the second monitor. Then you can simply lower the lid and get to work.
