As a PC gamer, my mouse is my best friend. It allows me to move around my computer at a quick pace, it’s my main interface between my hardware and the games I play. The problem is that sometimes after a little while a mouse will stutter, lag and/or jump around when it gets to hot. This is usually caused by a dirty or malfunctioning mouse pad or a mouse without enough space between the surface and the mouse to allow it to move.
The Magic Mouse, which is Apple’s version of a trackpad, has been my favorite mouse ever since they first came out, but lately it has been giving me issues. It works fine sometimes, but most of the time it lags, stutters and jumps around. Sometimes it just doesn’t work at all! It’s a pain, and I would like to solve the issue once and for all.

Suddenly your mouse can start stuttering, dragging and going completely crazy, jumping around the screen as if it were being controlled by someone else.This is what happened to me over the weekend (because these kinds of problems only happen when you have free time), and it drove me crazy: Nothing seemed redundant, the batteries in my wireless mouse were fully charged, and everything else seemed fine. But my mouse stuttered, slowed down and refused to follow my commands.
Eventually I was able to find a solution to my problem, and today I am here to help you if you are in the same situation. Today we are going to learn how to fix stuttering, skipping and mouse lag on your computer or laptop.
Mouse stutters, jumps, and/or drags – Correction
These problems usually occur with wireless mice, but as you will see, some of them can also apply to wired mice.
Mouse stuttering is usually caused by your router. When the router is near your device, it interferes with the wireless mouse’s signal, causing delays, stuttering, and erratic movements. These problems can be solved by simply moving away from the router.
The internet offers a lot of possible solutions, and I have tried them all without success or improvement in my situation. You can imagine how relieved I was when I found the real culprit. So I’ll list some other possible solutions to the problem, but check the router first, as that’s the most likely cause of your problems.
The behavior of my mouse was very strange: It functioned perfectly for a short (or long) time, with no skipping or stuttering, and then suddenly it went limp and crazy for a while.
My wifi router was right next to my computer, and apparently it decided to interfere with the signal my wireless mouse was emitting, causing all those delays, jerks, and skips.
It’s easy to check if your wireless router is causing mouse problems: Just turn off the router and wait a few seconds. If everything is back to normal and the mouse works as it should, then that is what caused the mouse to stutter!
In this case, you should place your wireless router at least one meter away from your computer to avoid mouse freezing and slowdown problems. Or, of course, remove the laptop/mouse from the router itself.
The more space in between, the better! You can also buy a regular wired mouse and leave the router where it is, but it’s usually easier to move the router.
It miraculously solved my stutter and mouse lag problems, and I’m sure it will help you too.
OPINION: Any other type of wireless/Bluetooth device near your mouse’s USB port can cause the same problems, not just a wireless router. So check them all to make sure there are no malfunctions, even if everything worked fine before.
Other possible causes of and remedies for mouse stutter problems
While I’m sure at least 90% of the time the router is the problem, just in case it isn’t, there are a few other things you can try to prevent the mouse from bouncing.
1. Check the batteries twice
Check that the batteries are not dead or running low (or that the mouse needs to be recharged). Both situations can cause strange mouse behavior, although normally only a delay occurs in such a situation.
2. Clean your mouse sensor
The sensor is the bright, usually red, indicator on the bottom of the mouse. If a small particle of dust or hair gets in the way, the mouse may start behaving strangely.
Wipe the sensor with a dry cloth, blow on it a few times to be sure and try again. Sometimes the particles contaminating the sensor are too small to be visible, but they may still be present.
3. Make sure the USB port is working properly.
Check that there is no problem with the USB port to which the mouse/power supply is connected: Just test the mouse on another computer/laptop and make sure it works properly. If this has happened and none of the solutions listed here have worked, it is likely that your USB port has decided to go haywire.
You can also just change the USB port the mouse is connected to and see if the situation changes or improves. It’s unlikely to be the cause, but it’s worth a try if nothing works.
4. Use a user-friendly interface for the mouse
Make sure the surface you are using the mouse on is comfortable. If you’re not sure, your best bet is to buy a mouse pad and put it on a flat surface when you use your mouse (bedding doesn’t count as a flat surface!).

5. Airframe rotation, if applicable
In Windows 7 and later, try turning off advanced visual settings like Aero, especially if your computer or laptop is an older model. They may interfere with the wireless mouse.
To disable the Aero options, right-click anywhere on the desktop and select Customize.
In the new window, select one of the themes under Basic and High Contrast and disable Aero, which consumes a lot of resources and can cause stuttering and mouse confusion.
Conclusion
There are several solutions to the stuttering mouse problem, but personally I think in most cases it’s the wireless router interfering with your wireless mouse’s signal, and removing it or your laptop from the router will solve your problem immediately.
If not, the cause of the mouse stuttering is at least one type of interference, so disable them one by one (or all together) to see which one is the culprit.
