  • VPN services are used to get around certain restrictions from providers like Netflix, or simply to protect your privacy when you’re connected.
  • Netflix, like many other online streaming platforms, is trying to prevent VPN users from accessing its service.
  • If Netflix detects that you are using a VPN, it may display an error message and deny you access.
  • Check out our guide to what you can do if Netflix gives you a VPN error message.

VPN services are a godsend for many internet users, especially when it comes to accessing blocked sites like Netflix. However, some VPN users face the situation where Netflix displays a VPN error.

Sometimes the VPN can be affected by various factors, such as connection problems, interrupted antivirus programs, incorrect proxy settings, etc.

That’s why we created this troubleshooting guide for Windows users whose VPN isn’t working with Netflix. The following solutions are ideal for this problem.

How do I fix a Netflix VPN error?

1. Change of VPN provider

Due to its immense popularity, Netflix is also persistent when it comes to blocking VPN users. To unlock Netflix libraries, you’ll need the same aggressive VPN software as your trusted partner.

In the fight against Internet censorship, private Internet access is indeed a pioneer. PIA skillfully circumvents all restrictions, from geo-referenced content to ISP throttling, and is the tool to unblock streaming.

Platforms like Netflix, HBO GO, Amazon Prime Video and others just come out of the box by connecting your device to this locking VPN.

With ultra-fast download speeds, unlimited bandwidth and over 3,292 strategically placed servers worldwide, you’ll soon forget about a slow connection, slow download times or buffering.

Instead, you will be able to enjoy streaming, torrenting, P2P sharing and full release web applications, as it should have been from the beginning.

Don’t think that speed and access to limited content are the only benefits of a public impact assessment! This state-of-the-art Virtual Private Network (VPN) is equipped with secure VPN tunnels, top-notch encryption, IP masquerading and many other privacy-oriented features that protect your online activities from surveillance and increase your security.

Private Internet access

The Netflix restriction is not suitable for PIA VPNs with accessibility! Go ahead, try it!

2. Reboot your PC

Windows users reported that they could solve their VPN problems by simply restarting their PC. This method is a quick fix that can fix your VPN connection so you can collaborate with Netflix.

You can also turn off the computer and wait a few minutes before restarting it.

3. Check the date and time settings.

Some Netflix VPN errors are caused by incorrect date and time settings on your computer. Check that the date and time settings are correct.

Disable automatic date and time updates via the Internet and set the date and time manually. If the clock still shows the wrong time, please refer to our Windows 10 Clock Repair Guide.

However, if you still get an error message after restarting the computer, you can proceed to the next step.

4. Check your internet connection

Sometimes a limited/inactive internet connection can prevent your VPN from working with Netflix. Therefore, you need to test your internet connection. To test your internet connection, disable the VPN service and try to access a website in your web browser.

If you can’t access the Internet when your VPN is disconnected, consider changing your Internet connection to a modem, broadband, or Wi-Fi connection.

5. Check your IP address

If the VPN doesn’t work with Netflix, check your IP address to get information like your city or region (country) next to the location you selected in the VPN windows. You can use a web service like IPLocation and WhatIsMyIPAddress to verify the location of your IP address.

However, if you are not connected to a VPN server, try connecting again. You can also connect to other VPN servers and access the Netflix service again.

6. Turn off your security software

Some antivirus programs may block your VPN connection, preventing you from accessing Netflix. Therefore, you may need to temporarily disable your antivirus or firewall to access Netflix. Some antivirus programs have a temporarily disabled protection option that you can use, while others do not.

If you have the ability to reinstall a security program or a program that blocks VPN connections, do so after you install the VPN program so that it allows VPN connections.

Therefore, uninstall the VPN software and then the security software that blocks the connection, reinstall the VPN software and then reinstall the security software on your computer.

You can also activate the VPN software in the Windows firewall. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Start menu > Enter Allow a program through Windows Firewall and press Enter.
  2. Press the Change Configuration button
  3. Now click the Allow another program button.
  4. Select the program you want to add, or click Browse to find the VPN program and click OK.
  5. Check if you can sign in again and try to access Netflix.

However, if this does not work, go to the next step.

7. Performing the Windowsupdate

Another way to solve the VPN problem that doesn’t work with Netflix is to upgrade your Windows operating system to the latest version.

The latest Windows updates improve the stability of the system and correct various problems that may occur, especially related to the VPN. You can follow these steps to upgrade any Windows operating system:

  1. Go to the Start menu > type Update in the search box and click Update Windows to continue.
  2. In the Windows Update window, check whether any updates are available and install them.
  3. Restart your Windows computer after the update is completed.

8. Manual DNS settings

Manually configuring your computer with different DNS server addresses can help you access Netflix and benefit from faster connection speeds.

Some computers do not automatically connect to DNS VPN servers, so you must manually configure them with the IP addresses of your DNS VPN servers. You can see how to do that in Windows here :

Step one: Settings for open network connections

  • Right click on Start and select Run
  • Type ncpa.cpl and click OK.
  • In the Network Connections window, find your usual LAN or wireless connection.
  • Right click on the connection and select Properties

Step two: Defining DNS server addresses

  • Double-click Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) or Internet Protocol.
  • Select Use the following DNS server addresses.
  • Enter these addresses for Google’s DNS server: Preferred DNS server 8.8.8 and alternative DNS server 8.8.4
  • If Google’s DNS is blocked, try the following: Enter Neustar DNS Advantage (156.154.70.1 and 156.154.71.1) and click OK, and enter Layer 3 DNS (4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2) and click OK.

Also, make sure your antivirus program is not blocking the Internet. If this happens, this is the way to unblock it.

9. Clear DNS/Cache

Another way to solve the problem is to empty your DNS and clear your web browser’s cache.

Your ISP’s DNS records may not be correct and are likely being used by Netflix to block VPN access to their service. You should therefore clear your DNS and web browser cache.

Here’s how:

Step one: DNS Flash

  • Go to Start > All Applications > Accessories
  • Right-click on Start and select Command Prompt (Admin).
  • Type ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter. You need to get a confirmation that says: The Windows IP configuration successfully cleared the DNS resolver cache.

Step two: Clear the web browser cache

  • Start a web browser, for example B. Mozilla Firefox.
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Del to open the Clear Last History dialog box.
  • From the Time frame drop-down list, choose All to delete.
  • Make sure the Hide field is checked. Click on the Remove button.

Message: Ctrl + Shift + Del can also be used to clear the cache in other web browsers such as Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Opera, Microsoft Edge etc.

10. Manual Agent Configuration

A proxy server is a server (computer system or application) that acts as an intermediary for requests on the Web. The proxy server shares its static/dynamic IP address with you so that you can access other websites through their location.

You can also change the IP address in your browser, be it Firefox, Chrome, Opera or Internet Explorer, using the following methods:

  • Firefox: Tools > Options > Advanced > Settings > Manual proxy configuration.
  • Chrome: Settings > Network > Change Proxy Settings > LAN Settings > Use Proxy Server > Advanced > HTTP.
  • The opera: Tools > Settings > Advanced > Network
  • Internet Explorer : Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Use proxy server > Advanced > HTTP.

Once you have entered the IP address and port received from the VPN service, check your IP address with IPLocation and WhatIsMyIPAddress to confirm that your IP address has changed.

  • Why doesn’t Netflix work with a VPN?

If Netflix works fine on your device, but stops working after you connect to a VPN, it means the VPN service you’re using is blocked by Netflix. You can try changing your location or getting a new IP address. If this doesn’t work, you need to change departments.

  • Which VPN works with Netflix?

The list of VPNs that work with Netflix should always be updated as new services that work and others that are banned are added. Check out our updated list of VPNs that work with Netflix.

  • How does Netflix know I’m using a VPN?

One possibility is the IP address provided by the VPN, which is found in Netflix databases as belonging to the VPN. The other is about the differences between your IP and the DNS server. It is always recommended to use the DNS servers provided by the VPN service to resolve security and other issues.

VPN is a completely legal service that is both offered and imposed. Illegal actions do not change status when performed during a VPN connection, so keep this in mind.
