The all-new ASUS X509FA is an everyday notebook no different than any other: Looks like it’s not very interesting. Everything seems boring, from features to performance or even display quality. However, this general greyness does not automatically mean that it is a forgery.

The ASUS X509FA is seen from the front.

There are currently three models available. In my opinion, the ASUS X509FA-DB51 is the best model equipped with an Intel Core i5 processor. Of course there is an i7 option, but I don’t think the price difference is justified. The only difference between these two models is the processor. And as far as I understand it, there is no need for extra computing power if all the other components remain the same.

His project is uninspiring, to say the least. Yet it has redeeming qualities. The fully plastic housing is reinforced by these metal brackets. They added a large one directly under the keyboard to reduce bending, and two more on the sides of the screen. Probably to increase the stiffness of the covering and prevent it from bending.

So despite its reinforced chassis, the ASUS X509 still looks and feels like the entry-level or lower-middle-class laptop it really is. You should also look at the price of ASUS compared to models with similar features.

ASUS X509FA Overview: A lover of folklore

In terms of performance, the ASUS X509 is quite balanced. The X509FA-DB51 model is based on an 8th generation Intel Core i5-8265U processor. Generation. It is a Whiskey Lake generation transformer that was launched in late 2018. It has 4 cores, a 6 megabyte cache and a clock frequency between 1.6 GHz and 3.9 GHz.

Compared to the more expensive ASUS X509FA-DB71 model, which is equipped with an Intel Core i7-8565U processor, the i5 version is about 10% slower. This difference is hardly noticeable for most users, even the most advanced. In my opinion, ASUS should have upgraded to this much more expensive model.

System memory

The memory capacity of the system is 8 Gigabyte DDR4 SDRAM. Considering the way the mid-range processor handles daily tasks, the system memory is sufficient. You will be able to easily multi-task, retouch photos and use many modern programs without crashing this setup.

Please note that only part of the total available system memory can be upgraded. Indeed, four gigabytes are soldered to the motherboard. So, if you want to increase the amount of memory, you can replace the second module with an 8 gigabyte USB stick to get a maximum of 12 gigabytes of RAM.

The ASUS X509FA is equipped with the fast 256GB PCIe Gen3 SSD. Whatever the model is, that’s all you get. For most users who need universal daily roaming, 256 gigabytes is more than enough. However, it would be a good idea for ASUS to enable the 512GB SSD in Core i7 mode.

However, you have provided the possibility to expand capacity by adding another hard drive or an additional hard drive, as there is a free slot available.

Graph and display

Don’t expect much from X509FA as far as the game is concerned. The integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 graphics card doesn’t go too far. Less demanding games such as Minecraft, CS:GO, popular MMOGs and others will be.

The X509FA features a Full HD (15.6-inch) screen with a wide viewing angle. Nothing exciting, because the colors seem more fuzzy than on more expensive laptops. But given the price, this ad is not so bad. For $600 you get an IPS type display of the FHD.

It is true that ASUS has narrower edges, but they are not as thin around the circumference. So it struck me that his profile is even more cumbersome than that of comparable modern laptops.

Interface and network options

There are many I/O options. This is where ASUS usually shines. The laptop is equipped with different kinds of connectors. There are modern and old USB ports. Here is a list of all available interface options :

  • Type-C USB 3.1 Gen 1
  • USB 3.0 Type A
  • 2 x USB 2.0 type A
  • HDMI output
  • Combined audio connection
  • Fingerprint reader (optional)

Network connectivity options are quite common on mid-range laptops. The X509FA is equipped with Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and Bluetooth 4.2 technology.

Portability and battery life

The ASUS X509FA (see on is heavier on the side than 15-inch laptops. It’s also one of the thickest I’ve seen this year, just south of an inch, while many models are already 0.7 inches. This 4.2-pound laptop is clearly not designed to be a reliable travel companion.

I wouldn’t ride with him, that’s for sure. However, this notebook will feel at home on your desk or even at the office. This is not an Ultrabook, but a practical desktop computer to replace daily tasks.

ASUS has not yet published an estimate of battery life. The X509FA must have a 32Wh dual-core battery. Which, to be honest, doesn’t sound very good. With a single charge you should probably expect a maximum of 6 to 8 hours, but to be sure we will have to wait for a test with a real scenario.

There is one laptop model that can really compete with this ASUS. The Acer Aspire 5 A515-54-51DJ (full overview here) is an extremely popular notebook with exactly the same hardware components (Intel Core i5-8265U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD), but at a much lower price. It also has a thinner profile and weighs less, making it more portable than the X509.

Last words

Overall, the ASUS X509FA-DB51 is an acceptable universal device in the mid-range price range. Although it has a few flaws, its strength lies in what’s under the bonnet. After all, it’s a beast of burden that won’t let you down as long as you use it for its intended purpose. It is able to meet all your daily computing needs, and much more.
