As the first video call service to allow users from different organizations to share screen with each other, Google Meet is a must-have for videoconferencing. The service also allows you to record the calls, which can be a great tool for training or saving the presentation for later. But Google Meet doesn’t let you record calls without permission, which is a major drawback. If you want to record your calls, there are a number of ways you can do it without needing permission.
If you are like most Google Apps for Work users, you have a lot of meetings and calls to attend that require recording. If you have an Android phone, you can use Google’s free Hangouts app to record and share those meetings. If you use the Chrome browser on your laptop or desktop, you can also use Google’s free Meet app to record and share those meetings via a Chrome browser extension.
When you use Google Hangouts to record a meeting, you may notice something strange happen. Even though you are not violating any rules by recording your meetings, the viewers may get frustrated when you launch Hangouts, and the recording begins without permission. That’s because Google automatically starts recording the meeting when you launch the app, and that recording is sent to Google. Google Meet allows users to record conversations, but this is currently only available to G Suite Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise, Education Fundamentals (but only until the end of 2021), Education Standard, Education Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and Education Plus customers. That means you have to pay at least $12 per user per month to record Google Meet video chats. While this feature is available through a G Suite account, there are some drawbacks to using the Google Meet check-in option. To begin, you must ask all participants in the meeting for permission to record the conversation. While this may be appropriate from a privacy perspective, it is not necessary to efficiently wait for the consent of all participants before recording a meeting. Recording Google Meetings (audio only)
If you only want to record audio during Google Meet, the Chrome extension Fireflies is a great way to do it. This extension is free for Google Chrome, and you can also use it in other Chromium-based browsers. This method works on both Windows and Mac for recording audio in Google Meet.
Install the Chrome Fireflies extension
To get started, install the Chrome Fireflies extension from the Chrome Extension Store. On this extension page, click the Add to Chrome button in the top right corner. When prompted to confirm the installation, click the Add Extension option. After installing the extension, go to the Extensions icon in the Google Chrome navigation bar and select the pin icon next to the Fireflies extension. This allows easy access to the Fireflies extension during Google Meet conversations.
Create your free Fireflies account
After you activate the Fireflies extension in Chrome, you can use your Google account to customize the extension. Fireflies must have access to your Google account in order to record your appointments and provide you with a dashboard. To do this, go to the extensions toolbar in the top right corner of Google Chrome and select the Fireflies icon. In the list that appears, select Continue with Google. Now you need to select the Google account you are using for Google Meet calls. On the next screen, you will see that Fireflies needs your permission to access your Google Account calendar to function effectively. To continue, click on the Allow option. That’s it. Google has now created your Fireflies account. You can immediately start recording the current session.
Google Meet audio recording
When you set up Fireflies and link it to your Google account, you can start recording at any time. To do this, go to meet.google.com and join or start a video conversation with the participants of your choice. If you’re in a Google meeting, click the firefly icon in the expansion panel, then choose Start Recording from the drop-down menu that appears. Your meeting audio will now be recorded and the Fireflies widget will appear on the left side of the meeting screen when the recording begins. To see if an item is active, look for the green icon at the bottom of the widget. You can pause the recording at any time by clicking on the pause icon in the Fireflies widget. Click the trash can icon at the bottom of the widget if you don’t want to save the entry. Click the Stop icon in the Firefly widget to stop and save the recording. When you click on the stop icon, the recording stops and you are given the option to name the recording and add the email addresses of the users with whom you want to share the recording. You can share an item with people in your domain, with all dating platforms, or just with yourself via Fireflies. Click Done after entering the email addresses of the people you want to share with. It will take a few minutes for your submission to appear in the Fireflies library. Access your files on Fireflies You can view all your data at any time on the Fireflies log page. You can also access this page from the Fireflies extension icon in Google Chrome. In the Fireflies expansion window, click the gear icon in the top right corner. In the window that opens, click on the option Notepad. This will take you to the Notepad page, where you will find a list of all the audio files from your Google Meet. Select an item in the log to listen to it or view its details. On the next page you can view your file and all its details. Recording Google Meetings (audio and video)
If recording audio from a Google Meet call isn’t enough, you can use Vmaker on your desktop to record both audio and video. With Vmaker, you can record video and audio simultaneously, not just audio. While there are other tools for recording Google Meet conversations, we chose Vmaker because it’s free, there’s no limit to the number of sessions you can record and save, and you can record both your screen and webcam image. At the time of writing, the service is only available as a desktop application on macOS, while Windows users will have to make do with the Chrome extension. On Windows and Mac (with the Chrome extension)
Since Vmaker does not yet have an application for Windows, we will use the Vmaker extension from the Chrome Web Store. If you want Vmaker to be an extension and not an application, you can use this method on macOS. Now click Add to Chrome to install the Vmaker extension. You will be asked to confirm the installation by clicking Add Extension. After installing the extension, go to the Google Chrome navigation bar and select the Extensions icon and then the pin icon next to the Vmaker extension. During Google Meet conversations, the Vmaker extension is immediately available. After you install Vmaker in Google Chrome, you will need to sign in to the service to use it. To do this, go to the extensions panel and click on the Vmaker extension icon, then wait for the Vmaker pop-up window to appear. The next screen will give you the option to log in with a Google or Facebook account, or to use another method. Select your preferred registration method and complete the appropriate verification steps. Only if you register with Vmaker will you be able to see all the features of the service. You can now start a video call or join a video call on Google Meet to get started. When the meeting starts, go to the top right corner and click on the Vmaker extension. This opens a drop-down menu where you can select how you want to record the meeting and which device you want to use to do so. At the top of this Vmaker extension, you can select the type of recording – screen, webcam or both. When you select Screen or Screen + Webcam, you can choose whether the recording should capture a single tab or the entire screen. You can also change the input device settings, including the camera and microphone. By selecting the drop-down menu next to the camera and microphone icons, you can choose the default input device. You can also determine if an extension has access to these devices, as they will be highlighted when disabled. You can also adjust the quality of the video recording by choosing the desired option from the drop-down list next to Video Quality. When you have adjusted the recorder settings to your liking, select Start Recording. When you do, a Vmaker widget will appear on the left side of your meeting screen, indicating that the video recording has begun. When you hover over this widget, it expands to provide more functionality. You can pause, unmute or mute the microphone by hovering your mouse over the widget. When you are finished recording the meeting, click the record icon (the icon at the top of the widget). This will immediately stop the recording and open it in a new Google Chrome tab. You can watch it by clicking on the play icon and also zoom in for a better experience. You can access other recording options by scrolling through this tab. On this page you can delete, edit, duplicate, upload and share an item. Anyone who has a link to your article can see it if you share it. Click on the Vmaker extension, then on the 3-dot icon in the context menu to access all your Vmaker recordings. Then select My Videos from the menu that appears. The browser opens a tab that displays all the videos recorded with Vmaker. You can edit, play, duplicate, move, share, delete or copy the link by simply clicking on the desired recording or by hovering over the 3-dot indicator in the video.
Only on Mac (with Vmaker application)
If you’re on macOS, you’ll be happy to know that Vmaker is available as a separate app for your Mac. You can download the application from the Vmaker website by following this link. The DMG file downloaded to your computer can then be used to install the application. After installing the Vmaker application, open it and set it up for the first time with your Google/Facebook account or email address, just like you did with the Vmaker extension. When you first start and configure Vmaker, you’ll be asked to give it all the necessary permissions on your Mac, including access to your camera, microphone, accessibility, and screen recording. Although the program will take you to the appropriate section of System Preferences, you can also access these settings manually by going to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy and selecting the settings you want to give Vmaker access to. You can enable permissions for Vmaker by clicking on the checkboxes next to the application name after opening each section for Camera, Microphone, Accessibility and Screen Recording. Once you have granted Vmaker all the necessary permissions, click on the Vmaker icon in the top menu bar of your Mac. You do not need to change the following settings before the meeting, but we recommend you do so to record the meeting as soon as possible, as some of you may need more settings than others. When you click on the icon, the main menu of Vmaker appears, where you can configure the recording settings. The Vmaker app, like the Chrome extension, allows you to choose between screen recording, webcam recording, both cameras or scheduled recording (the latter feature is not available in the extension and is a premium feature). When you select Screen or Screen + Webcam, you can choose whether the recording should capture a single window or the entire screen. Next, you can set the default input device for recording, which is your camera and microphone. You can also set the quality of the video recording by selecting it from the drop-down list next to Video Quality. Paying users can also set the window size manually. Once you have all the necessary settings in Vmaker, you can start creating your Google Encounters. Click on the Vmaker icon in the top menu bar to start recording now. When Vmaker opens, click the Start Recording button. If you chose the Save Window option, you will be asked to choose a window and then click Start Recording again. This will start the recording and the Vmaker widget should be visible behind the left edge of the recording window. This widget allows you to pause, delete, stop or mute a recording. In the menu bar next to the Vmaker icon, you’ll see a timer indicating the duration of the recording… When you are done recording, click on the recording icon in the Vmaker widget to stop recording. Once registration is complete, Vmaker will automatically load the saved content into your default web browser. From here you can play, delete, edit, duplicate or download a record. You can also share the entry with others by clicking Share and getting the link. The rest of the process is the same as for the Vmaker for Chrome extension.
