Windows 10 has a built-in external desktop client that allows you to access your desktop environment over the network or the Internet.
For this to work, however, you need to open an RDP port on your computer so that other devices can communicate with it remotely. The default port used by RDP is 3389, and we will see how to open this port in this article.

First we have to run the port through the Windows firewall.
Step one: Press Windows + I to open the Windows settings, and then click Update and Security.
Step two: Click Windows Security on the left sidebar.
Step three: Click Firewall and Network Security to open a new window.
Step four: Click on the Allow application via firewall button below.
Step five: Click the Edit Settings button to make the settings available for editing.
Step six: Scroll down to find the connection to the remote desktop. Allow this for public and private networks if you want to access the Internet. If you only need access to the network, we recommend that you only use the Private checkbox.
If the remote desktop option is not in the list, click on the option Allow other application… in the lower right corner and navigate to it:
Add C:WindowsSystem32mstsc.exe to the list.
Step seven: Press OK at the bottom to complete the settings.

If you want to use the Remote Desktop Client over the Internet, you need to run the client not only through existing firewalls, but also through your router.
Now, while the steps for each router vary by brand and model, here’s a general idea of what you should do.
Step one: Call the home page of the router. This is usually your default gateway. In my case, it’s 192,168,0.1.
Step two: Go to the router’s settings and find the port forwarding settings. On my router, it’s in the Applications tab.
Step three: We now forward the default RDP port 3389 via TCP to our computer’s local IP address. Save these settings and you’re ready to go.
Again, depending on your router, you may need to adopt a different approach to opening all ports so that applications can communicate over the Internet.

If you want to use Remote Desktop over the Internet, you will need to change the default RDP port to increase security. Here’s how:
Step one: Press the Windows + R button to open the Run window. Type regedit and press the Enter key.
Step two: Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControlTerminal ServerWinStationsRDP-Tcp
Step three: Find a key called PortNumber and enter a value between 1001-254535.
For safety reasons, we recommend a value of more than 30,000.

To check if your RDP port is open, you can use the tnc command in Windows Powershell.
Step one: Press the Windows + R key combination, type Powershell and then press Enter.
Step two: Carry out the following command
tnc [ip address] port 3389
The IP address is the local IP address of your PC or, if you want to use RDP on the Internet, the public IP address of your router. The order provides a list of values. Specifically, we are looking for the value of TcpTestSucced. It must indicate whether everything is working as planned.
