If there’s one thing computers have borrowed from smartphones, it’s location options (everything else is reversed). Microsoft has introduced Windows Location Settings in Windows 10, a rather handy feature when it comes to using apps like Maps, Uber and others on your computer.

Remember that the computer is not equipped with GPS and cannot connect to or receive data from mobile phone transmitters. How can the computer determine your position? The answer is the IP address. The computer can track your location via Wi-Fi to determine your geolocation.

You don’t have to worry, because Windows 10 records your location. Location information is stored in a secure database and is only accessible by authorized applications that require detailed location information for their operations. This feature allows you to calculate the distance between two locations (if one is your current location) and the time it takes to reach that location using the Maps application. Other apps, such as the weather, Uber, Amazon and other food delivery apps, also need this information to calculate time and distance and give the right results. You can also find information about restaurants, tourist attractions and other public places near your current location.

Microsoft has given its users the option to disable location tracking in Windows 10 and customize Windows location settings according to their needs and requirements.

How do I set the default location of Windows?

If you want to customize your location in Windows 10 to take advantage of certain apps that use Windows location settings, here are some simple steps to do so:

Step one: Press Windows + I to open the Settings application and locate the Privacy section.

Step two: Look on the left side of the settings panel and click the Location button. Now scroll down the right side until you find Standard location.

Step three: Touch Set as Default to open the Maps application. A new dialog box will appear in the Map application with your default location.

Step four: Click Set Default Location and select your current location on the map, enter the address manually, or better yet, click a previously saved location on the History tab.

The location you selected becomes the default location.

How to disable location tracking in Windows 10?

If, despite all the benefits, you decide to remove geolocation from your computer, here are the steps to do so:

Step one: Open Windows settings by pressing Windows + I on your keyboard.

Step two: Click the Privacy button under the various options in Settings.

Step three: Click the Location button, locate the toggle switch and drag it to disable Windows Location.

After that, tracking of your computer’s location is suspended, and Microsoft or other applications can no longer determine the location of Windows.

To change the zone in a local Windows application.

As we mentioned earlier, Windows Location stores your current location via your IP address, and it’s also useful for finding out the weather, ordering food or cycling, and finding restaurants and tourist spots nearby. However, if you want a location other than the default location in the Maps application, you must change the region in the Windows Location application.

Step one: Press Windows + I to open the Settings application and tap Time and Language.

Step two: Then click on Region and Language and find your country/region on the right side of the window.

Step three: Select the desired location and press to change the region.

Message: It is recommended that you log out and then back in to your account. This will force all applications to recognize the newly changed region as the current location.

Have you set the Windows location or disabled location tracking in Windows 10?

Windows Location is a fantastic and underrated feature that Microsoft has introduced in Windows 10. It has never gained popularity, mainly because of Google Maps, the most used navigation application in the world. However, if you’re not using Android or Microsoft PC, you don’t need to bring your smartphone, as you can book trips or dinners, find information on nearby destinations, and get a 24-hour weather forecast with just a few clicks on your computer.
