When we need a fast internet connection, we usually choose a broadband connection that offers a higher speed, which is good practice. Although few people are aware that sometimes, even with a faster broadband connection, higher speeds are not possible. Especially if you’re watching or using torrents.

This is usually due to the Domain Name System (DNS) provided by your ISP. An easy way to free yourself from this scenario is to use public DNS servers such as OpenDNS or Google DNS. We also talked about the DNS benchmark, which allows you to check which DNS will help you speed up the Internet, and today we’re going to look at open DNS.

What is OpenDNS:

Open DNS is a service that offers free premium DNS to any organization or individual to improve security. With your premium DNS, you can download pages faster and avoid downloading malicious pages. Open DNS has many features such as domain blocking, typo correction, secure DNS and offers protection against botnets.

Simply put: If you are using your ISP’s standard DNS, you need to switch to Open DNS and give it a chance. I’ve been using it on my computer for a long time, and although I try to use Google’s DNS, I also try to use it when I change location. From an individual point of view, Open DNS helps protect your computer by blocking these malicious websites.

Even if you have problems loading pages or if opening a website takes a long time despite your broadband connection, using Open DNS will solve your problem. They support a large DNS cache that speeds up queries and helps the Internet grow.

An ex: To give you an idea of the resolution of the DNS name, i.e. if you enter www.shoutmeloud.com, the name of the site is converted to the IP address of the server, and the site is thus opened on your page.

But sometimes the DNS provided by your ISP may not be able to execute an effective name resolution due to the small size of the cache, and the server is not powerful enough to handle all requests, so the site will not be able to find any error messages.

You can solve this problem by using Open DNS. According to the wiki page, open DNS is a DNS resolution for consumers and businesses as an alternative to their ISP. Open DNS are fast because their servers are on the main site and they support a large cache size for domain names.

Open DNS offers a free, premium service, and for normal domestic users like us, a free DNS I.P. is sufficient. Here are the DNS I.P.’s currently open that you can use and change the DNS settings found there

  • 208.67.222.222
  • 208.67.220.220

Use this DNS address to speed up the Internet. Enter these DNS addresses in the settings for your network connection as shown in the figure :

As I said before, this works best with some ISPs that don’t have a strong DNS and don’t usually load pages. I’m an Airtel broadband user, but I prefer OpenDNS to Airtel’s standard DNS. You can find out more about it on the official OpenDNS website.

Let us know if using public DNS servers has helped you increase the speed of your Internet connection.
